Eliminating Barriers to Girls in Industrial & Systems Engineering

Abstract: Eliminating Barriers to Girls in Industrial & Systems Engineering

UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 highlights gender equality as the key to transforming our world. Women make up only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Girls’ interests in math and science are shaped by the environment around them and their early educational experiences. We need to expose young girls to early experiences to help them understand what IISE is and guide them to select this profession as a career choice.

On May 20th, IISE will be partnering with Girl Scouts of Louisiana for a hybrid event at the conference site. The event will guide the girls through a practical exercise applying IISE concepts and will allow them to ask questions to engineers. This presentation will:

  • Provide examples of how we can work together to improve gender equality in Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Evaluate the results and lessons learned from the May 20th event
  • Summarize best practices from the event and provide recommendations for future events
