Abstract: This study proposes a new parking management policy where parking is reserved for drivers who participate in a centrally coordinated carpool for a given venue. In the proposed system, individuals self-identify as drivers and riders. Drivers are willing to transport a set of assigned riders in their personal vehicles to and from the venue in exchange for guaranteed parking. A centralized algorithm is used to simultaneously create the carpools by matching drivers and riders going to, and returning from, a venue and reserving parking for the carpools. A real-life implementation at University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez during spring 2023 that serves as a proof-of-concept is described.
